Did any of you ever here of this one for fuel mileage? Use 2 to 3 ozs of acetone per 10 gallons of gas. It also says you can use 1 to 2 ozs per 10 gallons of diesel fuel. This is were I found the article www. pureenergysystems.com

Acetone is some nasty stuff (what I mean is, you don't want in anywhere near your vehicle; inside or out).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetone amusing section on car additives. If it were that easy, GM/Ford/Chrysler would be handing out Acetone by the gallon to move their iron off the lots. Probably does nasty stuff to modern fuel and emission systems.

acetone is the main ingredient in fingernail polish remover and some paint removers-how can this be good for your engine? i think the world is so upset about fuel prices that the snake oil sellers are having a heyday

LOL I know this is bad but a wile back I needed to start my rod( those darn 3 carbs bled off after 2 or 3 weeks). And I put some paint thiner in a squirt bottle and shot it through the vents. It started right up, and got me higher than a kite.

Acetone is a surficant...which means it breaks up the surface tension of whatever liquid its added to...Acetone is also reputed to improve fuel economy by aiding in fuel atomization...Problem is...most guys experimenting with it are adding too much, and skewing the results...I've already tried acetone...results were inconclusive, no gain in fuel economy.
BTW....Acetone attacks the insulation in certain types of fuel injectors, causing them to short out, rendering them inoperative...

Hi everyone, new here.
This website has some interesting info on acetone used in very small quantities to up HP and mileage (3-4 oz/10 gal gas) Acetone Link (http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/)
They aren't making money on people using acetone, but would be making money on linked products for sale, etc. on their website.
Any comments on all of this... they supposedly have done tests and found no deterioration to fuel parts, except in some uncommon conditions. They say that mileage increases in most cases, if the proper, small amount is added.
Thanks,

I would think that to much acetone would be hard on any fuel pump that rely's on gas as being the lubricant. Acetone you find that in paint cleaners. Not a great thing to use if you have rubber seals.

I agree, but they are talking about a few ounces per 10 gallons of gas? Did you check out the link?

I read the link, But I'm not gonna try it lol. By the time a person buys acetone they could have put in that much more gas in the tank. I seen those ads for pills you can pop in the gas tank to save gas. It was like $20 for 10 pills. After paying extra for the pills I could buy that much more gas. So I wouldn't be saving anything in the long run. Even if I got 2 mpg more. :D

Good point, the cost of the acetone would be minuscule, since we are only talking about a few ounces per 10 gallons of gas. 2 ounces = 1/4 cup or 4 tablespoons.
A gallon of acetone would give you 64 2 ounce treatments (1 gallon=128 ounces/2 ounces)
but..
If you paid $16 for a gallon of acetone (Home Depot price):
It would would treat 640 gallons of gas (64 treatments x 10 gallons)
It would cost 25 cents per 10 gallon treatment ($16.00/64)
That would equal 2.5 cents per gallon (25 cents/10 gallons)
Here's an example:
If your mileage is 20mpg and you are paying $4/gallon gas = 20 cents/mile
If the acetone increases your mileage 10% = 22 miles/gallon
At 22 mpg and $4/gallon = 18.18 cents/mile or about 2 cents less per mile, but the acetone added 2.5 cents, so you aren't saving you're loosing slightly.
If your mileage is 20mpg and the acetone increases it by 20% = 24mpg
Then your cost per mile is 16.67 cents or 3.33 cents less
with the cost of the acetone figured in, you are saving .83 cents/gallon, or 83 cents per 10 gallons.
If your mileage is 15 mpg $4 gallon = 26.7 cents/mile
With a 20% increase = 18 mpg = 22.22 cents/mile = 4.48 cents less /mile
with the cost of the acetone figured in you're saving 1.98 cents/gallon, or $1.98 for 10 gallons
So, it looks like you would have to get at least a 20% increase in mileage to get much back in savings.. $1 to 2.00 per ten gallons or for a typical 15 gallon fill up about $1.33 to $2.97 savings.
Correct me if I made a mistake. ;)

If this stuff worked, the big 3 would be giving a drum away with every SUV to get the tanks off the lot.

If I did, I wouldn't be posting the costs I just did, which don't make it look like it is worth while using acetone unless the gas mileage improvement is over 20%, right?
No, I'm just trying to find out a way of improving my gas mileage, beyond the obvious of driving more conservatively, etc. And when I got answers that seemed just opinions, I pressed the issue.

i use acetone quite a bit in my trade, it is a great cleaner but it has it's limitations there too. maybe denatured alcohol would be of interest(another product i use a lot of).
