Hey guys,

Becareful shopping for appliances sold with a Maytag name on it. I got a air conditioner last summer thats not even a year old and doesn't work. (compressor doesn't engage) I guess a company named fedders made the air conditioner and maytag slap their name on it too sell. Well now that my air conditioner is broke. I called maytag, they said call fedders. I call fedders and they tell me to call maytag. It has a 5 year warranty that no one wants to fix. I also was listening on fedders hotline, And it said they filed bankruptcy. So I got a thinking we have a maytag repair shop. I call the repair shop and gave them the serial number. The repair shop says to me, Nope we don't fix that because it's not a maytag. I told him well it's got a maytag name on it, It also has the maytag man on the box. He says still, he can't get parts for it. So it looks to me so far I wasted money. I guess if I don't hear anything. I'll have to get a new air conditioner. You can bet it will never be a maytag again.

fedders used to be a good brand. i don"t about their financials (sp?) but would think any reputable shop could repair the problem. parts are parts and sometimes i can look around(when needed) and get them myself. you might learn a little about window units in the process-it already doesn't work try the repair yourself, just don"t let the freon out.

Every major appliance I own is a Maytag and we bought them all brand new. All were fairly decent and had no problems except for our fridge.
Absolutely nothing but hassel from Maytag from the word go. Our defrost made extremely loud clunking sounds as the ice was super melting. The dealer could do nothing. I wrote countless letters to Maytag and called their call center in Tennessee. The one woman there came across as though I killed a family member. Mean and ignorant. I always thought Maytag was good until I heard about this reputation. I contacted the President of Maytag in Iowa for a full replcement but he sided with his call center and offered me a couple of hundred bucks off towards a new one.
Then a year later Whirlpool bought out Maytag. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maytag

Maytag is not what it used to be and they do not stand behind their products. The person you talked to was passing the buck because they know too well that Maytag will do nothing so they don't really care what they say.

That 5 year warranty is still good. I would go back and get a replacement at the very least.
If it's under warranty and you can't get it fixed they someone owes you a new replacement unit. When you bought that unit they gave you a contract which is binding

Isn't that something. You would think a company like maytag would investigate products and how well they are made before selling it under their name. Whirlpool is better off just using their own name instead of maytags name. I would think that would hurt them otherwise.

Sadly I used to sell these products. Sadly because they really stood behind their products. I remember when the rep came by to instruct us about their products that he took it apart and told us the pluses and minuses of the product. Yes there WAS minuses and they were not ashamed to mention them.
It isn't that the parts had "planned obsolescence" but the parts were rated for 20 years and if it busted in the mean time they'd replaced it. If it happened after 20 years they sold the part cheaply.
They also told us that to become a Maytag rep they had to become repairmen first, and they learned to be repairmen by bringing in the competition's products to tear apart and see the pluses and minuses of THOSE products. It sounded like a good system.
I didn't know this happened to Maytag, but it sounds like Whirlpool has eliminated all the good things that made Maytag good.

Nothing helpful I know but just reminiscing. *le sigh*

Lonewulf: the last thing I want to do is to condescend. In fact the dealership we had was a landmark in our town. You know the type, they started off in the 40s from a house on a corner lot downtown. The the front became a show room and they grew. I knew a few of the guys personally and we still keep in touch. They knew and understood my issue and told me that corporate would not stand behind this known issue and that it was an engineering design fault. The area rep was also a good guy. Their service was second to none. But when corporate can't back you up then you know something is wrong. Our dealership is now out of business because corporate demanded too much from them.
So, first. hats off to you for being a Maytag rep "when you were" Major appliances can be fun and challenging. I took a "refer" course about 20 years ago so I was able to understand the physics of our fridge

I bought a new air conditioner today. It was much cheaper then the maytag. This new one is samsung. I thought being they sell phones, ipods, tv's, and dvd players. They have to be around for a while. So I took my chance to see. I read the reviews on it before going and buying it and it got a 4.9 out of a 5.0. Seems good so far. Was only 250 bucks lol.

After talking to fedders and maytag no one would take responsibility for it. I unbolted it and shoved it out the window. Made a nice dent in my back yard. I cut the power cord off of it because that was the only thing heavy duty on it. I'll make that into a nice extension cord.
