Hello,
I am looking for a car that my step dad owned and sold years back. My mother is unable to find any information or old papers that would give me a VIN# to track it and OH DMV does not have any records prior to fall of 1993. My step dad and his mother have both since passed. I would like to find the " ACTUAL" car he owned. Here is what I do know. The car I am looking for is a 1969 Camaro Convertible z11 Pacecar. The car did not have matching numbers, I believe the engine was an old 350 corvette motor. It had a Hurst shifter, not the automatic versions. The car was bought by my step dad in mid-late 80's from Florida. The car was titled in either his name, John Ulrich, or in his mothers name, Harriet LaPan. They were both from Mentor, OH 44060. The car was sold in good condition to a man from Warren,OH who was going to restore it, in 1992 or 1993. The car was sold to put in some Volleyball courts at my parents bar. I know that sounds bad, but they did what they had to do to try and make money and hopefully this will sound familiar to someone. I have tried many other avenues to find the car; DMV, Insurance records, credit unions..etc. No luck! PLEASE!!! If anyone knows of a car that fits this history, please contact me. My name is Gil and my email is .. gaspinwall@cfl.rr.com
I would appreciate any information anyone could provide.

Welcome to the forum Smokediver.
Please give things a few days or a week or so. This is the weekend and things around here are slow during the weekend, plus many people are on vacation.
I know there are a couple of people here that can help you so please be patient. I hope you get the answer you're looking for. Sounds like an interesting project.

You might be able to get information from Florida. They may keep records further back. Once you get the Vin they can track it down.

One other point, Ohio state workers tend to ovoid work like the plague. You may try a couple other places and see if you can find a person willing to work and help you out.

I just had a thought. Check with your fathers insurance agent. Both they and the insurance company would have had the VIN. I doubt they keep records this long, but you might get lucky.

Car fax can track a Vin, you might give them a call and see if their system can search names as well as by Vin.

Good luck

Really old VIN's are hard to track. Most of the "services" that track them (like CarFax) generally won't have anything that old and won;t give out names. Your best bet is the last state it was registered in, but getting a state agency to actually give you the info is unlikely too.

I don't know if it would help you but if you had a picture of the car that you could see the license plate number, that may be another clue.

In Virginia, you have to go to the main DMV in downtown Richmond to get anything special done, and its still like pulling teeth. Nobody there is gonna be in a hurry to help you.

If you know who your step-dad bought the car from, they may be able to help you with the VIN number. Myself, I have kept many old registration cards from my old rides.

Good Luck with your search

Thanks to all so far who have replied. I actually have already spoken to Credit Unions with no luck and also to the insurnace companies. Everyone was willing to help because the parties involved were deceased so no issues with privacy stuff. Unfortunately, they also both advised that once a person is deceased, they remove all their info. from database to save space. I have finally tracked down address of original seller to my step-dad, but he had more than 20 businesses he could have sold it from. So the hunt continues!
