Hello Guys,
Anyone has ever build a detached garage with a partial basement?
I'm thinking of using flexi core panels to get the job done.
Well, any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, I think many of us has at least thought about that concept once.
Personally I don't recommend you do it until you have a prefessional design and a building permit. This is not as simple as building a deck or utility shed.
needless to say you 'll be parking two tons of vehicle in there at one point.
If this is a Do-It-Yourself project and no permit then the by-law can order you to tear it down

Didn't they used to do oil change pits long ago?

Yes, but that was before the years of research determined that certain gasses heavier than air can be hazardous especially in these cases for the homeowner.
There are a lot of people that are aware and there are some that are not aware. Those old pits were commercial sites and inspected even though they were old standards.
But I get a little confused when I hear the term basement (partial basement) as opposed to pit.
With a basement the weight of the vehicle on top of the cavity or the weight of the vehicle with wheels either side of the cavity but on solid ground there's a difference.
If it's done right I support the project. But I just want our new friend to be aware of many surrounding circumstances with permits to protect himself and others and to work with today's safety standards that we never had many decades ago.
With all due respect you would not believe the permits and certifications required to gain access to "manholes" in cities streets. There's tons of CATV, Telcom and Power lines and amplifiers where workers need access along with the buddy system. I let my certification lapse because my job changed and I don't requires those accesses anymore. Yes, I know there's a difference between manholes and pits, but essentially they are the same in some respects.

I'd be curious to hear back from our new poster. Only one post with several answers and responses. Would "alexruseell" have any further comments or questions?
