zero to sixty performance standard was started by the car tester for Mechanix Illustrated magazine. A big bald guy named Tom, cant remember last name. It stuck and became a standard

I think the hump is for the exhaust system and catalytic converter. There ain't much room between the floor and the road on some of these FWD cars.

On my moms buick the exaust and fuel lines and everything else runs down the sides and there is just a blank spot. Why nor make it flat? It will save money because you wont have to bend the meetals.

It's a leftover from when there was a tranny there.

Carguy, to be honest, that hump in the floor wasn't just a left-over from the trans....It's there on FWD cars for floor pan stiffness and structural integrity...just like the old metal trash cans had beads running down the sides, it's a matter of displacing metal to "fool" the floor into thinking that it's much thicker, and therefore much stronger....for example, look at a cardboard box from the fluted edge, those paper "wiggles" is what gives the front and back paper all it's strength...without it, you could easily bend those two layers of paper with no effort at all. If you ever remove the rugs from your car, look at all the other bending and beading that adds to the structure of your car. They're ALL there for a reason, otherwise, FLAT would be cheaper.

If the hump wasn't there, then the shifter and exhaust would dangle on the ground. It's not a Corvair.
