I am one of those select few freaks who loves raw Hp. I am however wondering if anyone out there knows what the maximum boost an inline six cylinder can be given??? 5 liter, ford , Hi-rise head, holley 1150 double pumper.... am thinking of supercharging to obtain the desired boost.....

I'm confused. Are you building an inline 6 cylinder, or a 5.0 litre Ford? And I thought I'd heard of everything, but what the heck is a "high rise head"?

Regardless, the amount of boost an engine can take is determined by the integrity of the parts and the intended life of the engine. Alcohol and nitromethane burning drag racing engines can endure boost levels of 30 to 60 psi (pounds per square inch), but they also are only designed to run for a couple of minutes at a time and are frequently rebuilt.

For a street engine, that is, one that is designed to be reliable and also burn 92 octane gasoline that's available pretty much anywhere, boost should be limited to 6 to 9 psi. Even at this level, forged pistons are a necessity, as well as upgraded head gaskets, head bolts (or preferably head studs), etc. etc. etc.

As with any engine modifications, you really have to determine WHAT is expected of the equipment before you procede any further.

5 liter ford meaning I-6 @300 cid.... hi rise head meaning it is built with larger and better intake and exhaust structuring.... I definitely do realize that an engine must be built to take the extra forces exerted by running a boosted application.... anyway, this is what i define these questioned items as and would definitely appreciate the input....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a 300 cid Ford six called a 4.9 litre engine? That would probably save confusion.

no it is still referred to as a 5.0. ford put them in 5.0 mustangs for a few years in the 80's i believe. and i've seen a few of them that can make some serious torque...

Sorry Ratmonkey 4.9 is correct. The big six was used as a truck engine. Some may have been transplanted by owners, It was the 240cid with a one inch longer stroke, required a taller block. Maybe thats what the poster meant by highrise.

The 300 cu.in. six already puts out a lot of torque. It is much more drivable around town than the 5.0 V-8 especially if you have a heavy load. That's mostly due to the long stroke of the six. There's a company out there (somewhere) called "6=8" (six equals eight) that specializes in parts for IN-LINE SIX CYLINDER ENGINES, including multiple carbs, 4bbl carb manifolds, cams, destroked cranks, rods, etc, etc...I haven't seen them lately, I wonder if they still exist, and don't know how I'd do an internet search for a name like that. But,,,, I'll give it a shot.

Don't you mean a 4.9l? Thats what the 300-6cyl. is if somebody told you otherwise they are one somthing very strange...
