Are these additives just more "snake oil"? They really don't show tests that were performed by some creditable authority. It seems to me that any petroleum lubricant with small molecules capable of penetrating metal surfaces would also be very volatile and evaporate easily, especially when heat is applied. I hate to see automotive celebrities like Shelby and A. J. endorse something like this.

About a year ago, a study was made about some of these "wonder" products. It was reported that ZMAX indeed did damage to an engine. If you bought the product, there was a lawsiut to refund the purchase price. But as of today, there are still ZMAX billboards all over the Lowe's Speedway, who is part owner of ZMAX.

A buddy of mine used zmax in his older chevy that smoked a little and had a valve noise. Just by using it, his problems went away. If that's all he did to it, I was impressed.

Hey Guys,

Here goes my two cents!!! I'm 46 years old, and I've been around the auto repair/restoration business since I was 15. In all this time, the cars that have impressed me the most, are the ones owned by regular folk, who just plain take pride in maintaining their car(s) in optimum condition. This requires a consistent effort to do regular maintenance properly. There is simply no other substitute. These so-called wonder products are a crap-shoot. It's can be a very risky proposition to try many of them. As a consumer, how would you know which one is telling the truth? The industry seems to be built more around hyped TV infomercials, rather than concrete facts. These people are out to make a buck, and the lure of these miracle products seem to be too tempting for our rational psyche to resist. I believe the old- fashion way sometimes is still the best. When it comes to the auto business, you either pay now, or you will pay later!!!

How about your thoughts on this. I've had two different mechanics tell me a good way to flush out an engine is to drain the oil and replace it with tranny fluid. Drive it for about 500 miles, drain it, and put fresh oil in. Anybody else heard of this?

Ever notice the transmission mechanic, his hands are always clean. It must be a good solvent, But running trans fluid in the engine for even 5 seconds would scare the hell outa me!

Auto transmission fluid as engine flush? Never heard of that one - have heard pour some down carb throat with engine running for carbon cleaning. I would not do either - trans fluid is high detergent - that's where it's cleaning reputation comes from. You can purchase an engine flush - it smells very miuch like kerosene - it works quickly - directions on container.
