if it were the timing or the fuel grade that were causing something to rattle when i accelorate. what excatly is making the noise.

Detonation, preignition. Weird things going on in the combustion chambers. More than one flame front bumping in each other
Very hard on the engine.

so could this be damaging my bearings?

one more thing, could this be caused by bad sparkplugs or wires, or anything besides the timeing that has to do with the ditributer. the timeing looks dead on and the better gas just doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

what ignition system are you using? what is your spark plug gap?

Make sure the wires are routed to the proper spark plugs. If this is a small block Chevrolet, ensure the #5 and #7 wires are kept away from each other. The #7 cylinder fires right after #5 in the firing sequence, and they are side by side on the engine as well. You could be experiencing "crossfire," which is energy from the #5 when it fires inducing current flow in the parallel #7 wire, causing it to burn extremely early.

Are the mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms in the distributor working correctly?

Yes, this rattling will damage bearings, and rings, pistons, possibly even the valvetrain (because the harmonics inflicted on the crankshaft are transmited to the camshaft via the chain).
