call your local dealership and ask for parts. Give them the last 3 letters of the vin code under the alternator. The will tell ya what year and type the engine is. On the back of the block on a chevy you will see a vin"where the engine bolts to the bellhousing" A,B,C,D, and so on will be the first letter. A is January, B is feburary and so on. Second #'s is day of manufacturing as in the 20th,21rst, or even 1. The last digit is the year
Code will look like this:
April 23, 1985
Hope I could help. Be careful some people restamp the front code: the one under the alternator. They do it to sell a 305 for a 350 and so on. The rear # is the best to go by.
I know nothing about the Ford casting #. Above is only chevy

It's all chevy parts but it's parts from a 305, 350, 2.8L and a 3.1L
There's gotta be a site on the net somewhere :)
