I've just replaced my timing chain on a 1990 chevy 454ss. I need to know if I did it right. The reason I ask is when I was moving it to get #1 at TDC the old chain was skiping on the old cam gear. When I replaced everything the marks on both gears did line up but I had to move the cam gear a little to get the dowel pin to line up with hole on cam gear. What would happen if I moved the cam 360 degrees without the chain on and not move crank?

nothing would happen. It doesn't matter if you turn that cam 200 times without the crank moving as long as the marks line up when you install the chain. Or if you degree it you might be a mark or two off. If you dont have a cam card or a degree wheel I suggest to line the dots up: crankshaft up camshaft straight down. Good luck
