View Full Version : Greasy residue in coolant??

I have noticed a greasy looking residue in my overflow canister and on the inside of the radiator cap. Engine runs a little hot on a warm day, new radiator, hoses, and it uses some oil. No oil leaks or smoke noticeable. Is there any way oil can get into the radiator? If so, what do I need to fix?
Anyone know where the grease in the coolant is coming from?
Thanks!

Are you sure its oil or is it old coolant. Old coolant will gel up and look very similar to grease. When I do coolant jobs I see some nasty overflow tanks. This is where the coolant just sets there, it gets hot, and cold and no circulation will cause it to gel. I've seen the coolant in the radiator look very good but when you look in the overflow canister it looks very bad. Remove your canister and clean it often. If your not getting oil in your water or water in your oil you have nothing to worry about. Make sure it is oil in your water before pulling the heads. Good luck

Look at your oil, do you have some coolant? Does it look like a "milk shake"?
If so, that bad, head time....
