Modality is the way a certain thing is done. There can be different ways to do the same things. and each certain way would be its modality. Let's take an example of cutting threads for a screw; one modality would be a machinist's die, which would be one way, and another might be making a thread using a lathe. In the above example there are two modalities to do the same job, so it might be important when explaining a job done, which modality was used. So actually, elbi's comment can be considered correct.
