I have a problem with my 93 Grand AM. The oil light is on and there is a rapid knock or ping in the top of the engine. First thought was that it is probably the oil pump. I replaced it and it still does it. Light is still on and still a noise in top of engine. Obviously I'm not getting any oil pressure in the top of the engine. Any ideas why? If it were lifters making that noise, why is the light on? And if it were a stuck sensor, why the noise in the top? By the way, the sensor was good when I pulled out the oil pan. What could it be? Somebody please help me. I spent 4 nights on the oil pump alone because the metal pipe that is connected to the bottom radiator rubber hose and is connected to the bottom of something up top but y's off to the firewall broke while taking out the pan. And not to mention the stupid thing is still leaking. Nobody in my town has that pipe so I had to try and J.B. Weld the sucker. NO GO. Anyway, glad I got that off my chest. Thanks for the help..............CHEWY

You have a Quad 4 and hear knocking on the top? Could be a dead piston or valves not opening and closing properly. Have you reset the ECU? Sometimes the dummylights don't turn off cause the ECU needs to be reset.(Thanks GM!!)

How do you reset the ECU? I'm not too good with these types of cars.

Disconnect the battery for 30 minutes. Take the car for a spin. The ECU will program 5 settings into itself so drive easy and then hard. That is how the ECU determines the Air/Fuel Ratio and Efficency of the Grand Am. And after every modification your suppose to reset the ECU anyway. Especially if you don't have an aftermarket one.

But that doesn't get rid of the noise in the top of the engine does it? That only resets the oil light right?

it will only get rid of your oil light problem if theres somthing in the top half of the motor knocking you will need to get it looked at it sounds like it cood be a valve or a highdraulic lifter is gone or a rocker arm is loose but ya you will only benifit by losing your oil light but it will not fix it
