What, if any, is the difference between a blower and a supercharger?

None. Two terms for the same thing.
There is a difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger. A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gases, a supercharger is driven by the engine. Turbos provide "free" boost; blowers add parasitic losses to the engine, but are more than offset by the boost.
How's that?

but the turbo has lag, lag is no good.
turbos run hot, heat is no good.
Roots blowers stick out of the hood, style is good.

:D
Hole in hood is not stealthy, attracts law enforcement members for chat and exchange of addresses. You get to meet a bunch of new friends, too!

LOL @ thecarguy !!
I agree: style is very good!

Sure, turbos are nice, but I'd rather be blown.

hahahaha
A serious question now....
Ive only used blowers three times. First was my nova, and second was my toyota truck, third was another toyota truck. Each time I used a roots style blower. Ive been told that the centrifugal style blowers are more efficent. Do you guys know of any pros or cons regarding these 2 styles of blowers? Any main diffrences besides how they are mounted?

Turbos are better, and they have better fuel economy. Unlike superchargers that use engine power therefore poor fuel economy.

Turbo's and Superchargers both create heat. Thats why folks use intercoolers. Turbo lag can be compensated for by reducing the clearances in the housing and folks have been doing that for some time. Superchargers are good too.
It all comes down to which one you prefer. Whether it is 6 pounds or 30 pounds, boost is boost.
Everything has its pros and cons.

Beefy you are not going to believe this.... but I agree with you.

sorry elbi, but turbos are bad because the have such a lag. With a s/c you have power right when you step on the pedal. And I have yet to see a company ake a decent exhaust system that works well with a turbo.

I may have this backwards, but roots blowers develop most HP at lower rpm, since at higher rpm, high temps tend to negate the boost. Centrifical blowers are just the opposite.

diesels work better with turbos and gasoline engines work better with superchargers. a turbo will work with a gasoline engine but not as efficiently as a supercharger. the power loss caused by the belt driven supercharger is negligable(sp?) as the boot is instant.

Is it true that blowers get their designation based on what engine they were designed for? The 6:71 being designed for a 6 cyl diesel and an 8:71 designed for a 8 cyl?

Yes, that is true as I understand it.
