I remember as a teenager working on cars in the driveway. We couldn't afford hand cleaner, so we invented something. We would get Comet cleaner, the powder kind, and get some in one hand. Then we would use dishwashing liquid on top of that. WOW!!!! it would clean really well, but the reaction of combining them would cause a nosebleed so you have to hold your head to one side to keep from passing out.....

Towtrucks suggested I use soap and water. But me thinks that just one or the other will do the job.
But I've always liked GoJo for the tough stuff.
Please tell me you are joking lol. As a cook a had to take a safty course. That is one of the big no no's, mixing cleanin chemicals. Not only can you burn yourself but it can creat toxic feums. Even if not I have dont alot of stuff like that too and still here. Cant be that bad for you. Another thing that works well on everything, includin pine pitch is gas.

Yeah, Fast Orange with pumice really cuts the grease quick. Repeated use can dry your hands but guys on this forum are tough, right?, Right!
And as fotw says, don't mix your cleaners. Anything with bleach has the potential to react with other cleaners and create Chlorine gas. (That can actually kill you)

Just buy a box of latex rubber gloves and don't worry about cleaning your hands. They also give you a better gripe on your tools.
2 things about them though, when i get workin on my car i could up grease all over. if I have exposed skin it is dirty. and second thing i hate the smell of those glove. I know that they make gloves for the shop but I tryed workin with them when we were rebuildin the house in the winter. I had to go with no gloves, i could not get a good feel for anything.

Gloves are okay for some things, but if it is warm or hot where you are working, your hands start to sweat and your fingers start swimming around inside the gloves. I do use them for oil changes and other greasy messy repair work.
On a similar subject, you might want to use nitrile gloves. They are generally a little tougher and won't expose your body to latex. Latex can be an allergen to many folk. I work in the medical field and latex is almost universally excluded for the safety of the patient as well as the provider.

I guess they didn't teach you not to use gas as a cleaner. Gas is bad, very bad. Goes boom, and poof. It will also cause your skin to dry out and it is a known carcinogen (sp?)

We have latex gloves and they do make your hands sweet. I work as a mechanic at a manufacturing plant and we go through a lot of gloves. Some of the product, you can't get on your skin. As far as working of an auto, I may use them cleaning parts but for the most part, I hate using them and rarely do. When my daughter is in the garage with me, she wares them, but she is six years old. She has taken apart a tricycle twice out there.

At home I start with orange goop and then if there is anything left I get it with the lava. In the shop we have a dispenser with Zep TKO hand cleaner. Its a sea foam green kinda color and has bits of sand in it.

In the shop at work, I use sunlight laundry detergent, it doesn't dry my hands and it works really good.

I tried 'Mean Grean' and it worked well; what I didn't care for about it was it's smell. What I'm currently using, seems to work just as well, is 'Fast Orange' (this one, can you guess, smells of oranges, duh).

Well, I'm with proege on this one.
I've used many hand cleaners over the yearsand they all work great. Some better than others.
But too often I would quickly go down to the laundry room and grap a small scoop of tide, wash my hands once or twice and then towel.
The only downside is if you have any scratches or cuts, be prepared for some stinging Other than that Tide works for me. So does varsol.
That said. That's ok for the weekend warriors but for guys that are in grease everyday. I know that the proper hand cleaners have agents that protect your skin from other issues inclusing lanolin
