Okay, what exactly does the oil sending unit do? Where is it located? And how do I replace it?

well my guess is it sends oil to the engine? Best advice I can give is if you are going to do this yourself get a chiltons manual cause they have the best book for the Grand Am 92-95 years. I would know!

are you talking about the oil sensor??

im pretty sure they call it a sender also.

It usually is just an idiot light on your dash, that lights up when your engine doesn't have enough oil pressure.

What engine do you have.

The sensor on the 2.8 is near the starter/oil filter

the 2.5l is near the oil filter.

I have the 2.3/2.4 Quad 4 OHC. The Chilton's that I have says the oil sending unit is located somewhere around the valve cover on the back of the engine. There are 2 connectors back there but I don't know if that's it or not. I was told that the oil sending unit just senses oil pressure and that when the pressure is great enough, it activates a switch that turns the light out on the dash. I replaced the oil pump but the oil light is still on and there is still loud ticking in the top of the engine. I'm being told that it may be the main bearings are bad. If so, I'll have to get a complete overhaul. Any other suggestions before I do this?

If you have a 93 then you have a 2.3 liter OHC or DOHC engine not a 2.4 the 2.4 didnt' come around till 96. And your the second person I have seen stating you have a Quad 4 OHC. Do you have 16 vavles?

I'll be honest with you. I'm not sure if it's 16 valves or not. But would that matter for oil pressure? And what will thicker oil do? I think my problem is deeper than that.
