I got a question for you GM guys out there. I have a '91 Grand Prix with a 3.1L V-6 engine. It runs fine when it's cold but when it heats up to operating temp, it starts to miss. It acts just like a vacuum leak. It runs fine while I'm driving but when I pull up to a stoplight it starts kicking and missing. It does not do it in park or neutral. I also got a code in the computer about a week ago, it showed ignition. I looked for a vacuum leak but could not find any. Any suggestions???

could possibly be one of the ignition coils pretty common problem on thoes 3.1L engines but I would go ahead and visualy check the wires and maybe pull a plug out to check the general condition before i did anything else
and if you could post the trouble code that actualy came up might help someone point you in the direction of the problem

I agree coil packs, could be corroded/rusted and could have a bad spark plug. Coils are known to have that problem on the 3.1. I would check and clean all the coil terminals good and take it for a test run and see if that fixed it. If not could have a weak/bad coil.

I had a 94 Cavalier (my wife did actually) with a V6 and I can't remember which V6 but it was doing the same thing. I popped the hood and heard a snap-snap- snap sound and looked toward the sound and found one of the coils had cracked and was arcing to ground.

Code 42 is Electronic spark timing circuit - open or shorted :p

I have a 94 Cavalier that was doing the same thing. It ended up being the torque converter clutch solenoid on the tranny.

I'll bet it's a three speed automatic!! I had that problem on our '89 Cavalier. It would stall at intersections. This one is just running like sh*t.

I finally got around to changing the coils on the car. It cured the problem. Thanks for the replies.:D
