Engine break in

I know we've had this discussion before, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on the best way to break in a rebuilt engine.

do you mean the cam break in or overall engine?

I was talking about overall engine, but I would welcome advice on both.

drive it like you will in the future, that way you will know if it will last or not right away

This is very controvercial. I know that the cam needs an easy break-in period, but only if it is NOT a roller cam. I also know that slightly higher than normal engine temps will seat the rings faster and better than regular engine temps.

Well you can't have the best of both worlds in that aspect.

My belief is to top off all fluid levels first.....[make sure the cooling system is free of air pockets]....then run the engine with no load at 2,000 RPM for 20 minutes (cam break-in). Then change the oil and drive like normal for 500 miles. Then change oil again and do what ever the heck you want with the thing.

BTW, I voted "other".

I agree with danny. Every engine ive built is doing fine and all still run (in the garage on stands, but can be put into comission at any time).
