Another Bronco Tailgate Problem

I have read almost all the suggestions with bronco tailgate problems, but I still cannot get mine solved. I have a 1990 bronco with a tailgate that doesn't work and the window is stuck in the up position. The lockout bar (if I have the right one) does nothing. I am afraid of hitting something and dropping the window on my hands. The motor is the problem and I am attempting to replace it. I am also afraid of the warnings about the "counter balance spring" which is supposed to be under a great deal of pressure. How do I get the window down without dropping it on my hands???

Thanks
