engine run on with key taken out

when I take the key out, the engine does not turn off. i replaced the starter selonoid about a month ago. i just replaced the carb. and distri. and the timing is set. the volt. reg. was replaced last week along with the ignition switch and key cylinder. motor mounts were replaced today but the coil lead is still hot. any ideas? i really need help and am new to the hobby with little experience.

for some reason the coil seems to be constantly charged-probably the coil wire(ignition) is shorted to a constant hot or is not correctly connected to the switch.

what kind/year of vehicle is this?

Is it running smoothly or coughing and spitting? If the timing is too far advanced you can get run-on after the key is turned off.

Sounds like something with the ignition switch.

the time is good, the engine runs great, with the key in and with it out.

Then I would be looking at your ignition switch, it's not cutting off power to your ignition system.

Is this something that just started, or was it happening before you installed the new switch?

it just started after the new carb and distrib. were put in. nothing under the dash was touched until the car would not turn off.

trace the hot lead from the coil to it's source checking it's condition along the way.

one other thing to check is the solenoid, when the starter is engaged there is a terminal there that energizes the coil. it may be shorted and always energized.

thanks for the heads up on the solenoid. i changed it today and now the lead is not hot. it must have burned out when i was bumping the engine around to top dead center to set the timing.
