Survival-what is your plan?

With all the storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornado's and all the other things in the world that threaten to cause you and yours some losses of power, home or anything you need daily do you have a plan. I would like to hear some idea's from people that have been through it. I know a lot of us through the years have had our shares of terrible storms and made it. Lots just hold on and pray, but what about the next day or week, what plans have you made to make it and how have you insured that those items will be safe. I hate to mention Joplin or even in my own area in Greenville Tn and Russel County Va that took such hard hits to mention a few.

I have a storm shelter that is the rear part of my garage that is built in the side of a hill, the roof near the rear of the garage is over 10 feet under ground. It is a cinder block garage with a steel frame and although level in the area you pull your car into, the rear windows are over 10 feet from the floor inside ( the garage has two offices in this area, the garage was a body shop for farm tractors at one time). I have secured some shelfs and a cabinet to the walls and have lots of water, canned food and even a few MRE's in there. Dog food and a few medical supplies as well. As for some power, I have three car jump boxes and a inverter for a small lamp, a scanner and we have a few wind up weather radio's out there, and inside the house we have a duffel bag with some spare cloths, meds and flash lights. I have prying tools in the garage and even some two way radios charged and on stand by out there. I am sure there are lots of things I am missing, I have also two coleman stoves with several tanks although the deep freeze is in the house. I would be interested in hearing any idea's if anyone cared to share them. One more thing, I have a loud boat horn that might just help. I hope I am not coming across as paranoid but with all that is happening out there, if I can prepare now cheap and have it, it cant hurt.

I live in the opposite side of the state from where all the hard times were for everyone. I was driving at the time of the earthquake in the mountains and never felt anything at all. It did put in my head to get prepared for some type of disaster that I may survive. Some say it is overkill but the ones who have been through it know how silly it is to not prepare at all.

Ray I have a basement and a small 4' x4' area off the side that the well and pump was in. It has a concrete cap with about a foot of dirt over it. So if there is any danger the house could collapse I can get into my hole.

I have a generator. It is gasoline only. The problem is it can suck down about 10 gallons in a day (24 hr). It's hard to keep enough gasoline on hand for an extended need. Even counting on using the trucks gas tank. Also you don't use them very often and the carb can get gunked up. I have had to clean it while holding a flash light in my teeth, while freezing. The ones that operate on Natural gas would be the ticket, if you have a pipe line to your house.

I keep enough food in the freezer to feed us for a couple months. Always have plenty of canned food as well.

I have enough ammo to defend myself.

I have enough knowledge to get by if I have to. I'm certain I am less capable health wise. Medicine or the lack thereof, could be the biggest problem. Your not able to stock pile that. It seems the system is designed to take control from you.

I plan to cry, curl up in the corner and face my demise like a little girl LOL!

Can't do much, I'm not very mobile. Garb a gun and shoot everything that looks threatening and eat it if I have too.

I do have back-up power for my radios...........but I had to sell all my radios

And Ray? What are you doing in VA?

olddog, I feel any plan is better than none. I guess I have had a lot of time to think. I been caught up in reading about all kinds of scenarios. I even have bug spray. One can never have enough but knowing just some basics can help. A good knife, lighter and horns or whistles. I also have home protection and agree that medication or the lack of it will be the big problem with all the breathing meds I have to take. Really just by posting this may get a few thinking about it that did not. With the earthquake and all the other storms that have hit the area a lot of people got caught up and was not ready. I have found a lot of sites that have started up a topic about this and it does give anyone something to think about.

Steve, been in Va. since March. Not working in Tn anymore so Va. is as good as anywhere. I am about 36 miles from Ky and Tn border. One red light in town and a subway..Fleemarket every weekend. I like it here, it dont feel like home yet like Tn did but I was not from there either. Detroit Michigan was home..lol
I kind of try to save up every time there is a buy one get one free item and put it up. It adds up after a while. Plus there are no taxes in Ky on food and we go there about everyweek.

I have read about that type of thing happening. Lots of guns out there for that or named for that. lol In that case, or that was the case, the only casualities would be the survivers as far as I am concerned.
