Turbo's and Superchargers

Hey I was wondering I'm new to the whole car scene. I bought myself a Toyota 2001 Celica GT-S. Its got a 1.8L engine with 180hp .. however it only has about 130lbs of tourque so I am wanting to do some upgrades, I want this car to be drivable. I was looking at a Supercharger. But I'm hearing that they can damage "weak" engines. I was wondering if anyone knows if its safe to put a supercharger on a 4cylinder 1.8l like mine ? Or if anyone has any tips they could pass on it would be appreciated.

supercharger or turbo

It doesn't really matter if you go with a turbo or a supercharger--the shortblock isn't going to live long if you leave it stock. I know you didn't want to hear that. If you really want/need more power, start with a full professional rebuild. Most motor guys can point you in the right direction, not to mention get you really good power without the cost and aggravation of a turbo or supercharger. Before you do anything call around and talk to some motor builders. Tubos and superchargers both have pros and cons. A supercharger uses engine horsepower to run it... Yes it will give you a lot more in return. A supercharger is always "on" as opposed to a turbo. A turbo usually only "turns on" under load when you need it. They tend to be a little gentler on the shortblock since you usually won't have full boost all the time like from a supercharger. A turbo does take slightly longer to make power though. It's called "turbo lag". Basically it just takes a bit for it to wind up. Again, there are really no set rules. You're best bet is to call around and talk to the professionals. Most people will be more than happy to help you because they know you're going to spend a lot of money if you go through with it.
