i hate carbs.
hey gotta new carb...street avenger series. (about a month old) it just started to act weird. i start my car, let it warm up and it will idle fine...lets say around 700 rpms. when i start to drive it down the road thing start to change....the rpms "stick" to what rpm i shift at. so if i shift at 2500 rpms, my engine stays revd' that high until im done switching gears or until i tap on the gas.
carb is a 670 with electric choke. for some reason is the choke re-engaging? someones gotta help me on this one....its pretty annoying. teh weird thing is my other carb did the say thing. |

If tapping on the gas brings you rpm back down to idle level, it sounds as maybe the throttle cable is sticking or something else in the linkage. If this happens all of the time, you could probably reproduce the problem with the engine off in your driveway. Take a look and see if there is binding. Also, could the new carburetor require a stronger return spring? Anyway, it sounds dangerous and should be corrected as soon as possible.

is there power at the electric choke from the alternator. This power keeps the bi-metalic spring of the electric choke in the off position by heating it with a power source from the alt. Check for intermitten power also or bad connection to ground.

yes the choke is hooked up, but i will check for voltage and a loose ground...i will also check my springs and linkage.
how much voltage should be to the choke? 12 volts? these are good suggestions because i really dont think its the carb seeing that this is the second carb that does this to me.... thanks guys....i will write back when i have a chance to check these problems! |

check your return spring-it could be hanging up on something and not allowing the throttle to close.

You should also check the carburetor mounting flange of the intake manifold to be sure it's not warped and therefore "twisting" the carb when it's bolted down.
Also, I've run into a situation where the base gasket I bought wasn't quite large enough on the inside part, and a portion of the gasket was interfering slightly with the throttle blades, causing them to hang open. Hope you find it soon! Sounds dangerous, as others have noted. DJS |

your first problem was buying a holley. i have found that edelbrock and the AFB carter are the most non tempremental. All of my friends and I have all had many problems with holley carbs.

Mattz28,
How are you doing with your carb problem? I haven't seen a post lately about and was wondering how you are doing.

T-bone... that's the C****, not the Holleys...LOL Seriously, I've had more luck with Holleys than any other carb... when they're right, they're right... but they are NOT a carb for a beginner, that's for sure.

I agree with Equine Boy -- I wouldn't be so quick to blame the Holley carbs. More "problems" have been blamed on the carburetor than the total of all the other parts of the car, usually because the carburetor is the most misunderstood component.
It's also the most sensitive component, and making small adjustments to it can have a large effect on how the engine and vehicle runs. So, like 1/4 says, they're not for beginners. And even more than a couple "experts" can't get them to work, either. Does this mean you have a 670 cfm Holley for sale CHEAP? DJS |
