Transmission Problems

Hello everybody, I recently bought a '91 Chevy Caprice, but the transmission is not working, It is an automatic transmission, It can go into reverse, but not into drive, well basically it can go backwards, not forwards. Any idea on what might cause this?

If the manual shift lever has come disconnected in the valve body and is in the reverse position, then it will only go in reverse, however, this is a VERY, VERY rare situation.
Other than that, is sounds like a major overhaul, NO such thing as external adjustment(s).

There is no forward gears whatsoever? That's pretty rare for an automatic, especially if it does have reverse. I'd be willing to bet that towtrucks is right about an external linkage problem.

If it truly does have only reverse, break open your piggy bank and stop counting once you have $500 set aside.

I've seen trannys lose all the forward gears and still have reverse. It happens. But I would put away more than $500.

pump pressure

I have heard of the same problem and I was told that it takes far less pump pressure for reverse than it does drive. I agree with all above that a rebuild is in store.
