Paint delamination
My truck(1990 C1500) was repainted five years ago, it looks good, but I have several areas on my truck where the paint has bubbled and in a couple areas cracked. One week after the 3-year warrenty expired is when the bubbling began.
What I want to know is: Was $1500 alot of money for a paint job that only lasts three years?, and what do you think would be a resonable price for a complete repainting of my truck (1990 Chevy C1500, Standard Cab/ Long bed)? Including the fact that all the paint would need removed. Does anyone have experience with Maaco, their advertised prices look good, but how is their overall quality? |

You should have gotten a pretty good paint job for $1500. I would take it back and at least ask about the warranty. Maybe they would give you a break on a redo. Peeling usually means they didn't do the prep well.

Was the paint job done as a part of a collision, or because the old paint was faded? If because of a collision and insurance paid the job, some insurance companies have a lifetime warranty on the work, but you have to ask for it.
As far as Macco, they may be able to do a good job, but they target the "car lot" type of business. Just paint it to make it sell...... Also, the paint shops that offer the $99.00 special have certain gimmicks. They get you in and sell you "add ons" such as body work, or moldings. They also mix their own paint from bulk materials. The paint job won't match the original color exact, but close enough to pass..... |

if it sounds too good it is, i would take it back also and ask(not tell) the paint shop for a deal. they may be able to spot repair and paint.

I believe the main reason it started to peel agian is because the autobody place who painted my truck never fixed the paint job correctly. They just sanded down the bad spots and repainted over the old paint. What is happening is that the old paint under the new paint job has started to peel again, which is messing up the newer paint job. I had the shop look at it. They said since the warrenty had expired they could not fix it free of charge. I got screwed. I have some plasti-cote touch up paint. I think I'll try to repair the bad spots myself this summer. I know that my truck would look better touched up than with the primer showing through peeling paint. I'm pretty sure that the paint will keep on peeling until it is all completely removed and the truck gets repainted. |

The only way to fix this problem correctly is to strip the vehicle down to bare metal. I worked at a local Chevrolet dealership as a Painter for many years. I have found that the only way to totally eliminate this from reoccurring is to strip the vehicle. The problem lies in the factory paint having adhesion problems to the primer-sealer. The sealer cured to the point that the paint would not adhere properly. When the paint gets one stone chip, scratch, or nick, this exposes the sealer to the weather. Moisture will then begin to get between the two layers and the end result is the paint coming off in very large flakes. This problem occurred at the factory when they switched to the new, environmentally safer paints, sealers, primers. Sorry to be so long winded, but the right way to fix this and to have your truck last for years without any trouble, dulling, blistering, peeling is to find a reputable shop. They will strip the truck to bare metal, and then apply a good basecoat/clearcoat, or single stage urethane to the truck. Most major paint companies will offer a lifetime warranty on their paint when applied properly in a paint shop which is certified by that company. This will not be cheap, but will be more than worth it 10 years down the road when your truck still looks as if it rolled out of the booth.
Hope this helps, let me know how you make out! Rich

Thanks for the info.
My truck is the smoke blue metallic color (light blue), and I've noticed many of the same color with the peeling problem. I guess as of now I will let the paint go untill it gets pretty bad, then I'll get it painted right. My Truck only has 60K and I have no plans on ever getting rid of it. So I know having it painted, again, will probably happen in the near future. Thanks |
