318 charging issue
I have an 84 dodge ram and the voltage meter fluctuates. The idle is steady it doesn't surge. Is it the regulator or the altenator? But if I replace on or the other should the part not replace needs to be replaced?

what is your voltage showing?
is it going from 14 and higher? can be a bad regulator 14 and 12 can mean a bad alternator, or a regulator. Most car shops have an alternator tester, that they can test whats wrong with your alt for free. |

The voltmeter doesn't indicate 12 or 14. It only shows charge and discharge. And it goes back and forth between the two.

Take it to the local parts store like advanced auto or auto zone they offer free voltage checks. Sounds like an alternator going out or the battery is dead. If it is jumping around when you turn on an accessory it is your battery, if it does it with no accessory's on it is more than likely your alternator.
