Gas gauge problems

I have a 88 mustang lx with a 5.0 and the gas gauge seems to be stuck on full and wont come down. and it only had a half a tank. I thought by maybe filling the tank with gas it would unstick. So I went to the gas station and twisted off the gas cap and a bunch of air came out. so I filled it up with gas and it still stcking. and every time i take the gas cap off a little air will come out. I would apreciate everyones input on whats going on with it.

Thanks

Mine is the same way. I dont that the air is anything to worrie about, I believe that there is even a warning on the cap itself about presure blowing off. I have given up on fixing it. I figured out the tank size and miles per gallon, and set my trip and at X number of mile I refill. I give my self about 1/4 of a tank befor I refill. If no one here can offer any help, which I am sure they can, this might be the way that you have to do it also.

Try droping the gas tank and remove the sending unit. I believe this has a electric fuel pump built into the tank. This could be where the problem is at.I had a similiar problem with achevy. The car was in an accident where the baffle plates in the tank moved. They where resting agaisnt the sending unit.

As long as you have the tank dropped, go ahead and test the guage and wiring. There should be two wires connected to the sending unit and with the wires removed the guage should read zero. Touch the wires together or use a jumper then it shoud read full.

It's about the easiest test you could ever do on a car. :-)
I hope this helps!
