What is a Tivo?

I asked this on another thread but the door got locked before I found out. Something to replace a VCR? I've never heard of one

Tech TV

If you have ever watched Tech TV, the owners of that station own the tvo machine. It is a way of replacing the vcr, but I think you can program it to record much more than one show at a time. It is pricey and has a few competetors out there. That is all I really know about it.

Does it use a tape or a disk?

It uses a hard drive. It is little more then a slow computer. Buy a TV Capture card for your computer and do the same thing for 80 bucks.

You can buy them for a couple hundred bucks. They have two tuners in them. You can record two different channels while watching something previously recorded. It's all on a hard drive system. Your guide is two weeks in advance so you can set to record anything very early. Also if your show changes time or anything the machine will pick it up. Other than live events, I haven't watched a commercial in two years. Doh.

It sounds like a great item to have, the price seems to be cheaper than just a short while ago. I might check the local pawn shops for a deal. Do you have to suscribe to anything?

Once you have one you can't live without it. We've had ours for a year and we use it everyday. We can't stand watching directly off the cable anymore where we have to wait on the commercials. We bought the lifetime subscription to the guide for about $200. You can pay monthly at $13./month. The guide is automatically downloaded to your TIVO from a local dialup.

Our son has a Replay TV. Same idea. different company.

I just received a deal in the mail that anyone thinking about getting rid of cable and going to driect tv may want to look into.

Also if you already have direct tv and are looking into TiVo this is a smoking deal.

My buddy just ordered from this # and got a TiVo, a second receiver, free install and free shipping for 200 bucks.
TiVo is 5 bucks a month so his bill would be about 45 a month for the two receivers. Very sweet.
