Exhaust

OK so I cant find an exhaust that will fit my car, and I will be damned if I give a muffler shop 500 to make me one. So here is my idea. I can order some stright pipe from work what every die i want. Do you think that is an ok idea for me to do that, get the measurements and take it to a shop and just have them bend it for me? I am also having a problem findin headers that will fit in there. There is only about 2 1/2 inch clearance from the block to the engine bay so the stock manifold fit tight. Any ideas?

Doug Thorley is the only name that comes to mind, but there are several header makers that make headers that go through the inner fender and outside the frame rails. But thats gonna be a pretty penny.

If you wanna do it yourself you can buy exhaust pipe pretty cheap (the local place here in LA sells it for 75 cents a foot). A cheap tube bender from harbor freight (dont need a good one for exhaust pipe as its thin) and you can weld it yourself, bolt it together yourself, of have someone weld it.

generally it's the labor of making the exhaust fit properly not the pipe thats expensive. that shop that quoted you for a complete exhaust might sell you the pipe cheap-try them first.

64 Ford Fairlane 4 door sedan. Hey is another question, what is a good size pipe to run? I need enough back presure, so I am not sure if 2 1/2 is to big? maybe 2 1/4?

If you have a stock 302 in there, 2 inch should be more than big enough. 2 1/2 won't hurt, just don't go any bigger or you'll lose the exhaust velocity. danny is right about the price, the labor is the most expensive. I bent my own exhaust up for my Willys. I saved some money, but it was hardly worth the aggravation. As far as headers go, did you check out Summit?

It is a stock 302 now but I hope not for long. I want to build a better motor. I have not hunted alot on headers but I will have to start. I know that it would be much easyer for me to have someone do it, but I dont know to me I get a much better feelin know that I built part of it, and not pay someone to do it for me. Make sence? I pride thing I guess.

fotw. i dont think you will be able to get headers in there without other modifications. You might want to try some of the hugger headers for the newer mustangs.
