86 Ford LTD aod shudder

OK, I know this is not a cool car but it is transportation. The problem is that it shudders at start, sometimes while crusing down the street and sometimes while at speed on th interstate. Does anyone know the solution to the shudder problem?? Besides destroying the car.

Welcome to the forum!
I think this is a cool car or could be with the proper motivation.
You'll have to be a little more specific with your details. Does the shudder seem engine/driveline related? Suspension?

That is what I was thinking also. But a bad tire, bent driveshaft etc can cause a shudder as well.

I just took a pot shot. Of course without more info I would not know. If this had an Overdrive transmission, my better guess would be the lockup torque converter from his description.

Thanks for the reply. The shudder seems to be only engine related. Shudders from a dead start and when there is even a light load on the engine such as going up hill. Can push down on gas to downshift and shudder goes away.

Thanks for the reply. The car does have an overdrive transmission and the shudder goes away when downshifting.

I'll bet it the lockup converter. The early versions of OD transmissions I think used a centrifical lockup, the newer one are electrically locked by the computer. I'll bet as it tries to go in/out or out/in to OD is where your having problems. Should be able to yank the trans and change the converter in a day (weekend if your sipping brews).
