Blazer won't shut off

Need help! I have a 1990 full size Chevy Blazer. About two months ago the problem started where when I turn off the ignition and remove the key the engine continues to run. I replaced the ignition switch and am still having the problem. I even disconnected the ignition switch and my alarm completely and it still continues to run. The alternator is only two years old.

Running smoothly or running on (sputtering and coughing)?

What exactly did you replace, the tumbler where the key goes or the guts behind it? It's been awhile since I took a GM steering column apart but I seem to recall the actual electric part of the switch has a long pigtail that goes down the steering column. Is that what you replaced?

I replaced both the tumbler (just mechanical) and the switch itself which is further down in the steering column.

Bizarre. Guess you'll need a wiring diagram and an Volt-Ohm meter. Has the ignition system been "hacked on" lately? There must be a short somewhere in the circuit that energizes the ignition (I'm assuming the starter does not try to stay engaged after you start the engine the first time). I'll bet there is a frayed wire on that circuit. How do you finally shut the truck off? Pull the coil wire or something? If so, the ignition system on the primary side is probably still hot.

Get a schematic, wiring diagram, and connector location diagram (maybe stop by a dealer and make a copy- if they are really nice), and trace out why the ignition is staying hot. Something is not getting turned off, or something.

With the engine stopped, disconnect the battery, reconnect it, and measure the 12 volts to the ignition (coil). Is it hot? Then start it, turn the key off, and stop it however you are, then check 12 volts at the ignition, is it hot?

Is the charging system still charging when you turn the key to the off position.

If it is I would suspect the linkage rod between the key and the switch or the adjustment in the switch.....

If not, you have a short somewhere and I would start at the connection points that had the alarm wired in.

Good point on suspecting the alarm system.
