2001 S10 350 Swap

I have a 2001 S10 LS 2.2L and I want to swap in a 350. I have read alot of the articles posted on the Internet about the Engines, Transmissions, and the rear end needing an 8 1/2 inch pumpkin. I just want to know if the statement posted on one site about the best engine being "Camaro/Firebird engines, particularly those from ’88-’92 model years, since their accessories, hoses, and oil- pressure and water-temp sending units easily integrate with the S-10" is still a valid statement. I have not found many people swapping a 350 into such a new vehicle.

Hey, I "found" that site when the OHC timing belt broke on my 740 Volvo, and wiped out 12 of the 16 valves....I couldn't justify the $$$ for fixing it.. a 350 in that thing would have been nice, but, time... money... garage... inclination...[any other excuses will be appreciated] ... sissor lift... engine lift.. labor...

tried the website

I went to that web site and looked through it. Very good info but once again it appears that they are referring to an older S10 modification. If anyone has any information as to the revelance of these sites to a newer S10 I would appreiate any help.

Lots of people make kits with motor mounts and what not for 350 swaps into s-10's. What would be really cool is an LS1 swap, same block with 350. Now that the new vettes are out (LS2) there are a lot of people getting rid of vettes with very high miles, and theres lots of them that have been crashed. Im not sure on a price for a complete brand new crate motor LS1 with computer and everything, but I do know that the LS2 crate motors with complete harness and computer is $6800, id guess the LS1 crate motor is considerably less.

IMO the 80's and early 90's engine with all the vac lines are junk, not to mention detroit still hadnet had the computer thing dialed in yet. Your going to lack serious power and economy out of an OBDI engine. With an LS1 its going to take some patience with all the electrical (late model GM LS engines only have 2 vacuum lines so thats simple) and with GM they make all the connectors different so its not even that hard, you will have lots of reliability, OBDII diagnostics, and lots of power. The other option would be a carburated engine with HEI ignition, the benifit here would be simplicity and cost would be fairly low, however power wouldnt be anywhere near the LS1.

with an 88-92 350 your not going to have simplicity. Early smog systems are an absolute mess. I could care less if your going to smog your truck or not (although if you are I can tell you the correct way to do so), but with all the emissions controlls if one of them is setup wrong your going to have problems. Even if you take out the EGR and what not and put on block off plates, you still have that primitive computer that works with the smog controlls. If your looking for perfomance (why else put a v8 into a mini truck?) the early computers dont take kindly to larger cams or even easy stuff like big headers...so save yourself the headache and go with the simple carburated 350, or the out of the box LS1.

Put "ls1 into S10" into Google-there are plenty of places with mounts, kits, etc. Be prepared, most of the truck will need replacing.

With the engine/trans/rearend and other frame/suspension work plus all the wiring, computer, exhaust, cooling,... A nice conversion can cost $10K+, maybe a little less if you find a wrecked F body (Camaro/Firebird) or even a GTO, with the running gear you want and your good at fabrication.

Do you live in a place that does emission testing? If not, a carbed ZZ4 would be a much easier conversion-no computer or fuel injection.

You might want to check out: http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Che..._S-10_V-8.html

This guy has a manual of "how to" stuff a V8 into an S10-gives you an idea of what's involved.

i haven't done any ls/s10 conversions but i have done several sbc/s10 conversions, the book doug mentioned is a good one, advanced adapters is good too. i used the book for the motor mounts and the rest was basically straight forward mechanics. there are several tips included and you can substitute some items from the recommended-like the radiator they recommend was from a 'vette but i used a rad from a camaro with good results. mix and match. research first then build. i didn't do any major frame mods but did get the driveshaft redone. any more questions just ask. keep us in the loop on your project.

well the whole thing about this truck is to use fuel injection to make it look factory like it was suppose to be that way with the corvette emblems tail lights wheels and ect... but the main thing is engine and getting it running, im also trying to find a junked 97 and up s-10 or sonoma, i have one i drive now but i havent paid it off yet. i wish i could just have a list of things i need.

You basically need everything out of a running LS1 donor-engine, trans, wiring, computer(s), a beefed up rear end, cooling system that can take the heat, fuel system,....

Not 10 times easier but alot easier-no computer, no O2 sensors, no high pressure fuel system and return line to the tank BUT, if your area has emission testing, the truck has to pass emiissions for the way it was originally built.

Have you ever done a swap?
