EHPS Power Steering

I am looking into installing an electric/hydraulic power steering pump on my 68 Vette (327 4 speed). It originally had manual steering. I installed a rack and pinion system Steeroids , but have not yet installed a pump.

I bought a used pump, but it is not the correct year and the pulley interfers with a frame crossmember. I thought a good solution would be to use an electric pump. I could mount it out of the way, and would not add the load to the engine.

Is this feasible? Does anyone have experience with installing or converting to electric pumps? Is there an aftermarket pump available, or could anyone recommed one that was used on another model?

Thanks for your input!

Why can't you use a stock PS pump?

I may be able to if I locate the right parts. I am not sure how the 68 pump differs from the one I bought. The brackets and pump mount up to the engine fine. The pulley just seems to be too large. I think clearance is minimal even if all is as it should be.........and this car is almost 40 years old.

I do know that the 68 had a bolt on pulley, but the one I have has a pressed on pulley. This is how I know it is not the correct year. NAPA sells a rebuilt pump, but they don't have a pulley for it. I may be able to get one from some place like March Performance.

I just thought an electric pump would be a good alternative.

Ecklers or MidAmerica ought to have all the stuff you need. I can look at my 69' to get numbers off of it if you need it.

I am going down to the Swapfest at Mid America a week from tomorrow (4/2). I can see what is available there, but I am also interested in pursuing the electric route.

Just seems like extra work and money for little upside gain.

I agree with dougbfresh. Shouldn't be too much trouble with just about everyone selling stuff for small block Chevys. I'd keep it simple - mechanical p/s pump.
Pick up a copy of Street Rodder Magazine. Lots of vendors for your project.
Good luck.
