Engine, trans conversion

I have a 78 Ford LTD 351Mod with a C6 trans which i am thinkin about pulling the engine trans and brakes out and putting them in my truck, Im pretty sure they will al fit, but im wondering what will i have to do to get this all in? is it even worth it, the LTD's Body is beat, it has attracted to many accidents just by being parked on the street. but the Engine and trans have been rebuilt and are good. Another But is that i might be using the truck as a daily driver and it has a very solid running 223 straight 6. which gets better than 10MPG i get from the LTD.

would it be worth it?

Depends on what constitutes worth it! You'll probably have to fab up mounts/crossmember/driveshaft/shifter/.... Does the 6 cylinder have as much HP/torque as the 351? By 1978, the Ford V8's have very little HP (140 or so from the info below). Bet the 6 is close in power.

Issued: 25 Sept 1979
Revised: 01 August 1999

the 351M400 has more horsepower, the 6 is a 223 with about 98 horses when off the line.

Is that truck the one in your signature? If it is, is it a straight axle? Lots of work to swap the brakes for sure to that truck. Also, that is what projects are made of, but you say you need a daily driver. Like said there will be a lot of fabrication to do to make it all work. With you needing a D/Driver you must only have the two vehicles so I (Myself) would plan it out real well before I tore either one of them down. JMO

It is a straight axle. It could be converted to Twin I Beam by using parts from a 1966 but you are talking about allot of time and money.

As to the engine tranny swap, anything is possible. If you've got the cash and/or ability.

The V8 engines available in 1963 for your truck was the Y-Block. They came with 3 cubic inch dispacements. 292, 312 and another one I forget. These were workhorse engines.

There is allot of info on swaps at Fort Truck Enthusiasts

well im thinkin about the swap. im gonna keep the truck with the same engine and trans as it has now. if i want a bigger engine ill probably try putting in a matching y block in, i want to keep it to its time as much as possible, plus the LTD 400 is pretty inefficient.

8 Cylinder sizes according to yr, i didnt bother with 6 cylinders

48-52 Engine
239 2BC carb

53-56 Engne
239
256
272 all above 2BC carb

57-58 Engine
272 2BC 145 HP 1957-58
272 2BC 153 HP 1957

59-60 Engine
292 2BC 158 HP
292 2BC 160HP

also 61-66 engine sizes
292 4BC carb
292 2BC carb
352 2BC carb

67-72 engine
302
352
360
390 all above 2V carb

i don't know where you got the list from but there are a lot of 8's missing there. for one year(56 i believe) ford made a 238. i didn't see the 312 thunderbird engine as well as the 260/289's along with the missing 351's, 427's, 428's and of course the 429 cj and let's not forget the ever popular 460
