Dodge Ram Xfer Case
I'm gonna try to help out my bro-in-law who has no computer and not much mechanical savvy either: He has a '01 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 w/ automatic, and he just had his 4th transfer case failure. He has only owned it from maybe 50k mi to now about 82k. He seldom uses the 4wd. First time, had a salvage unit put in which immediately developed a cracked case, so got a new case and old guts out of that deal, on warranty, if I got the facts right. That was in MA. Similar failure happened all over again in NC, with no accessibility to warranty of first deal. Back in MA now, and last week it started growling again or dumping oil, I'm not sure which happened first. He wants me to check the VIN on CarFax or something like that. I say there's nothing could have happened to this truck that could cause more than the first failure, just another lousy MOPAR design. Or is he doing something wrong and denying it, or too ignorant to know it? Ideas?
