First, lower your idle speed, if it is really 3000 at idle

The idle shouldn't be no more then 1000 rpms and with the air conditioner running it will idle around 750 rpms, 3000 rpms is highway speed. And if the idle speeds up and slows down it could be a few things, Could be a ignition (like rust coated coil plug ends), egr valve, vaccuum leak. But on a 97 you should get a engine light for one of these and if you do bring it to a auto parts store and have them check the code. It's so much easier then guessing and replacing stuff you don't need too. Usually auto parts stores will test for free.

"UPDATE" Sorry guys, the idol is at 1000 rpm's. Though it could be tuned alittle better. Maybe about 800. I've replaced the plugs and checked the gap. Took the egr valve off and cleaned the plunger. Gonna check the ignition tomorrow and look at the wires. No engine check lights have come on, so no codes.

It could still have a code, it takes 2 of the same faults in a given time period to set the MIL light. You may still have 1 or more (different faults) that have not triggered the MIL light yet.

like dougbfresh said there could be pending or even mature codes that haven't made the MIL go off. Wouldn't hurt to check that out.
