The 5.4 is about 1 inch taller and 1 inch wider to handle the longer stroke. Other than that its about the same engine as the 4.6. It may be harder to work on especially where things a tight, but Ford puts these engines in from the factory so it likely will fit. The Triton V-10 is the 5.4 with two more cylinders. It too should fit, as it is only longer by a cylinder. However, it would be my guess that you can purchase another truck with the engine you want for about the same money.

I like the idea of buying a crate engine and stroking it. I want this truck to be a show truck one day and I want power to back up its looks.
I've been looking at the Ford crate engines on www.crateengine.net. Is Dart a manufacturer or a type of engine? I'm just not sure which engine would fit. I'd like something bigger than the 4.6L but it doesn't have to be drastic. When we do this, I will be replacing the tranny (and other things I'm sure) to handle the power. Its very exciting thinking and talking about this. I love learning all I can!

To bad you can't stroke out a 351 crate. And get it in there without all the hassle. Maybe there's a website with 5.4 crates somewhere. A 5.4 stroker would have all the power you ever wanted. I'm not sure what dart stands for, it says with dart. Whatever that is, but looking at the dart engines, I'm thinking those are big blocks.
I forgot to mention, that drop down list of the crate 351 engine it's says 408 ci which tells me thats already a stroker engine, all that would be needed is to drop it in.

never know, until you play around and read up on it. I'm not a ford guy so I don't know the stroke. But it would be intresting to see what crank and rods could be all placed in one of these newer engines. And learn the income or down fall of each build up. I do like the idea that the 5.4 has 3 valves, and a little bit I read about the 4.6 some are 2 valve and some are 4 valve. Theres alot of potenial that probably can be done with these engines someday, it's just to bad. Aftermarket companys cater to mainly the mustang, and not more to the truck people.

Dart is an aftermarket company that makes heads and much more. I think they made a complete (block & heads) aluminum Ford 427 FE engine.

There are several heads for the modulars. Several 2 valve versions, a couple 4 valve version, and now a 3 valve head. I know that intake manifolds do not interchange on all these heads, but I do not know it the exhaust manifolds are different or not.
If you swapped a 4.6 with 5.4 that had the same heads, the header would bolt on, but with the block being taller and wider there could be a clearance issue. |
