Trouble Starting my car
Help... I have a 68 Camaro that is garaged during the rainy season and then I take it out for Hot August Nights and drive it a bit again until the rain starts. I know and do the basic maintenance on my cars, but have always relied on my husband to do the major stuff. He has moved out but before he did he made sure to remove my carburetor. I put the carburetor on via a repair manuel and even drove the car for about two miles when parked it to pickup my children. When I tried to start the engine again it wouldn't start. It cranks, but won't turn over. The battery is charged. It almost seems like it isn't getting any fuel, but could that be because I was able to drive it 2 miles before parking it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is there a chance the my husband put water in my fuel tank?

Take the top off the air filter look down the carb and the pull the accelerator linkage a time or 2. Does it shoot a stream of fuel? If it does, time to check for spark. You'll need a helper for that. By the way Cranking and Turning Over are basically the same thing, the engine is spinning via the starter motor, FIRING is when it actually starts. You also may not have the choke set correctly.

Put a little cap of gas down the carb and see if it pops off or starts. This will indicate, plugged fuel filter, choke not adjusted, fuel pump not pumping fuel into the carb. Theres all kinds of little things you can try to narrow down whats going on here. Do you know which carb you put on?

Did he take the carburetor off for mechanical reasons? I won't ask the other question! Did the engine run fine or did it have a rough idle, run rough while driving (missing, backfiring etc. etc.)?

I just hope when he took it off, he didn't mess with the distributor and move the timing.

It ran for a while, most likely a carb adjustment-choke most likely. She didn't say how well it ran when it did run.

Guys, thanks for all the reply's. I checked all the spark plug wires to make sure I didn't have any broken ones, then I got a small block chevy book to help me out. I had a cracked coil and I guess it shorted the wire from the coil because the wire was burned almost all the way through. I looked around in the garage last night and found a couple of spare ones on the shelf. It took me all day and a good portion of the night, but I am up and running. You all are the best! Thank you!

Great news and thanks for updating the solution to your problem. We can all learn from your experience.

Great job. You always start with a visual inspection before hooking up a scantool.
