my little project

Since I bought the 1996 pickup a few months ago I've been fixing it up. I re-did the interior. Added 38" tires. And put posi in front and back. I put on dual exhaust with two new high performance catalytic converters. It sounds pretty good. But now I've decided since I've never tried shorty headers. This time I will give them a whirl. In the past all my engines I've used long/full length headers. So this will be a little experiment for me. I have been pondering on either hedman, edelbrock, and JBA headers. After reading some people's reviews I ordered the JBA shorty headers that are also smog headers. Also before I put the headers on I need to install my cam which is a 220 duration and edelbrock heads. So thats what I've been working on the past weekends at home.

do you emission test where your at ? i got black flagged at a emission test here because of a altered emission system , dual exhaust with dual converters, they first did the sniffer then failed me for visual, no converters, then when i installed dual converters they still failed me for a altered emission sysytem, so i made a y-pipe from my shorty headers and ran it thru a single converter and then made a y-pipe after the converter. it tested cleaner with out a converter than with a converter in the original location . just wondering. they told me a dual exhaut system with dual converters wouldnt properly heat the converter properly so it wouldnt work at its full potenial. either way, once every two years i would just swap the y-pipes back in test it and remove them again. good luck with the truck....

Yep we do emissions. After installing the dual exhaust and dual catalytic converters. I took the truck down to DMV and they tested it and passed just fine. My converters are close to the engine where they get pretty hot. maybe 8-9 inches of pipe from the headers to the catalytic converters. So my headers will need to be drilled and a bun welded in for o2 sensors. Thats where my o2 sensors are mounted now on the stock exhaust manifolds. I think alot of it, has to do with where they are located on the system. Like you say with one catalytic converter it would get hotter. This truck came from the factory with dual cats. I just changed them out for a better set.

When will you do this? Don't forget to balance the camshaft!

Parts on new carpeting? Yikes.

You'll probably like how much easier the headers are to install. Surprised you did not get coated headers.

New parts on new carpeting.......no worries.

Ceramic coating is preferable, but not for everyone.

I'll get around to it next weekend. I went with painted headers, too see if I like them better or not. Eventually I'm going to paint the headers orange with some high temp paint for headers. Give my engine bay a different look. I already have black valve covers and the engine will get painted chevy orange.
