Valve adjuster.

I assume that one of the valve adjusters under the rocker arm is bad. I found one adjuster that will not have any play while the others do. This creates a pining sound when I accelerate and idle.

I bought two new ones but those do not have any play either. Is this normal?? It seems that without the play, the adjuster is longer then the other ones.

Any advice??
Thanks,

Hey dutch, what year and kind of engine are you talking about here?

I've never seen rocker arms that can be adjusted underneath them!

It is a 1996 Dodge caravan with a 3.0 v6. There are lash adjusters between the rockerarm and the valve spring.

The problem is that all the other lash adjusters have some freeplay while one of them is stuck.

I wonder if these lash adjusters need to have freeplay or not. Do I have five bad ones and one good one or reversed??

I can find an image on the Napa online website if needed

Thanks

Hiw about a manual-if you don't set the lash correctly you could burn a valve or WORSE! This might help, but I'd still get a manual. http://www.allpar.com/eek/ValveSeals.html

I also found some info from a website that went to Alldata.com. It seems that Lash adjusters cannot have freeplay. It this case (after 257,000Mls) it seems that I have five bad ones. I am just wondering if this is a common issue with the Dodge engines (Mitsubishi).

What's common on an engine w/ 1/4 million miles-it's got wear SOMEWHERE.

If I'm thinking of the right engine and setup, There should be zero play. I would assume you have 5 bad. And one of them has enough play to make a ticking sound. But you have to expect things like this with a engine with over 200,000 miles, something(s) will go eventually.

Has the head's ever been removed? If not, after 257,000 miles it's time for something to tear up.

I would get a really good manual liked already suggested and adjust the valve's. Unless you know for a fact that the rockerarms are worn out. Then I would buy new ones.

Look at the end of the valve stem and see if it's wallowed out. If that's the case, you'll know what to replace. Keep us posted!

Edit: it just goes to show that I'm a slow typer, I believe I started before the two above.

Valve adjusters - Problem fixed!

Problem is fixed!! The lash adjusters needed to be replaced and as confirmed, you can have a little of freeplay as long as it feels like a spring inside the lash adjuster. Once the adjusters are loose, the pinging will start.

Thanks for all the feedback....
